Be Thankful For Grammar
Be Thankful For Grammar
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m grateful for the grammar. You heard me right Thank you for the grammar. I guess maybe I should say I’m grateful I learned grammar. It’s really true. As a writer, I learned to be grateful for those years of elementary school, junior high, and high school grammar class.
Do you remember sitting through those awful grammar classes? Yes of course. I remember being asked to remember the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives. And I remember learning the difference between the subject of a sentence and the predicate of the same sentence. I have no real recollection of how grammar concepts made it through the pages and into my mind from the teachers’ mouths, but they did. I consciously never paid attention during grammar class because at the time I was years away from deciding to become a writer. I think the grammar I needed to learn came through osmosis. Think about what our society would be like without the existence of grammar.
Basically, grammar is the thing that allows us to communicate the same kind of English. Sure, you and I both know what a dog or a tomato is, but what if you thought that every sentence that ends with a period was actually a question. Wouldn’t that be confusing? Or what if I decided to write my next novel, one that uses sentences like this: “Told Billy to a mom who loves Sarah.” Do you understand this? Absolutely not, because that sentence was not written with proper English grammar in mind. If we’re lucky or just a good imagination we can determine that Sarah is telling Billy something about loving being a mom. But without grammar, even the most common English words are not easy to understand.
Do you like to sit and read a good book? Or maybe relaxing in front of a movie is your cup of tea? Do you enjoy surfing the internet for the latest facts and news? If you enjoy any of these things, you better appreciate Grammarly. It is proper grammar that allows you to read a book or understand the script of a movie or even make sense of the internet.
If you are still not convinced about the importance of grammar in your life, try to carry on the conversation using compound sentences like I wrote for you earlier. It is very difficult to find a day when no one understands each other’s thoughts or questions.
Fortunately, because we have grammar, we don’t have to worry about miscommunication with people because of the way we organize our words. So be thankful for Grammarly because I guarantee it has made your life a lot easier.
