Having a Positive Online Learning Experience

Struggling to learn something new can be very frustrating. When a child tries to learn something but does not understand it, the child’s motivation to learn can be affected. An effective way to get a child the help they need is through a tutor, especially an online tutor. But, as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. It is the same with children. Doesn’t seem to want to learn anything. So, although you want the best for your child, he or she will often resist helping. With a little finesse, you can be sure he still has a positive online learning experience.

Online tutoring can take many forms and in many subjects. The key is finding the right one for your child. Does your child learn better by watching or reading or listening to something? Different tutoring services are suitable for different children, and choosing the right one will help your child have a positive online tutoring experience. Few services offer voice-to-voice communication, and this is really helpful for kids who have weak reading comprehension skills. However, a child who is a visual learner can find it very helpful to see a math problem, for example, that it can be solved.

Another important aspect of having a positive online learning experience is being prepared for the sessions. The more a student knows how to get in, the more he will be out of sessions. If not fully prepared, he will get less of a session because he is trying to learn the material for the first time. If, however, he has already seen a somewhat similar problem, but has probably stuck on a concept or two, he will be in a better position to benefit from a teaching session. Furthermore, if he has already made the effort to learn the material himself, it will take a lot of work to re-implement the teaching material – repetition is one of the best learning tools. As you can see, one of the keys to having a positive online tutoring session is preparation.

In the end, and perhaps the hardest thing to do, is to proceed with the right attitude. Attitude is another key component to getting positive online tutoring. If a child simply does not want to learn, it will be very difficult to force it. If, however, the child is convinced that he is going to get something out of a teaching session, he probably will. Of course, some kids will be embarrassed to seek help, and others believe they’ve mastered a subject, but their grades say otherwise. Positive online learning can help these children, but only if they are willing to learn. Persuading a child to take the time to learn is something that is not only difficult but also very difficult. However, once a child starts seeing benefits from 1 or 2 learning sessions, he or she will yearn for more!
